Course Materials and Preparing for Your Course

Your PowerScore ACT Live Online Course materials and The Official ACT Prep Guide were shipped to you. If you don’t receive the books within seven days, please contact our offices at (800) 545-1750 or by email at shipping@powerscore.com.

Prior to the start of your Live Online Course, you will need to take and score a full-length ACT Practice Exam (required for the score increase guarantee). If you have already received your copy of The Official ACT Prep Guide, you should take Test #1 in the book (page 41) as your pre-course test. We also recommend that you read Chapter 4, "Identifying Areas for Improvement," which follows the test in the book.

If you will not receive your Official ACT Prep Guide prior to the first class, you can print a practice test from The ACT website. You can download a test here:

Free Practice Test (Click Here to Download the Free Practice Test)

After completing the test, you can score it on the Online Student Center (see "ACT Practice Tests and Online Scoring" section below).

This first exam is required so that you get a feel for the ACT’s format, content, and time restraints. It is NOT an indicator of your potential, so don’t panic if you score lower than you expected! The course will teach you everything you need to know confidently attack the test and ultimately increase your score. Check out the Online Student Center section below for instructions on how to take the Pre-Course Practice Test!

The Live Online course will take place in the Adobe Connect platform. You will receive an email two business days prior to the start of class containing your Adobe Connect login credentials and system setup instructions.

Each lesson is saved and stored in your Student Portal the following business day after your live lesson. You can return to these archives to review entire lessons or specific portions of the lessons so that you may customize your independent study to cover the concepts causing you the most difficulty. Your access to Adobe Connect and the archived recordings expires after the second official ACT exam following your course.

Online Student Center Resources

Within your OSC you’ll find the following five sections. Let’s take a brief look at each:

This section contains a Course Introduction module that should be completed prior to the start of class.

Here you will find detailed, written explanations for the questions in each lesson. Your instructor will also carefully review these questions in class, but this resource is invaluable for students who want to review independently or who are absent from class.

One of the most important aspects of ACT preparation is to regularly take official practice tests and track your progress over time. Please note that this is also required for the Score Increase Guarantee. This system allows you to input your answer choices and receive an immediate evaluation of your test performance.

When testing on your own, you’ll be able to use our Virtual Proctor. This program instructs you when to begin and end each section of the test, simulating a real proctor on test day to give you the most accurate experience possible. To begin, click on "Play" and follow the vocal prompts as you are guided through the sections.

You are required to take four practice tests throughout the course. The first test should be taken prior to the start of the course so you can generate a “Before” score. The last should occur within a few days of the completion of the course (or as close to the end of the course as possible, if time constraints surrounding your official test administration do not permit you to take it after the course) to provide you with an “After” score. The other two tests can be taken at your discretion, but we recommend the second one occurring shortly before or after Lesson 4 and the third one occurring shortly before or after Lesson 6. Take the tests in the order presented in the book, so that your first practice test is Test #1 in The Official ACT Prep Guide.

Once you’ve completed your practice test, enter your answers in our Online Test Scoring System to get a detailed performance analysis. With this feedback you’ll be able to easily identify which concepts you have mastered and which areas still require some attention, allowing you to better plan your future efforts. Your instructor can also review your performance and provide helpful commentary.

To take your Pre-Course Practice Test:

  1. Click ACT Practice Tests and Take-Home Test Scoring.
  2. From the "Tests & Explanations" tab, click "Test One."
  3. To time your test, click on the "ACT Virtual Proctor" tab and click the "play" button to begin.
  4. Score your completed practice exam.

To access the Test Scoring System:

  1. Click Practice Tests and Take-Home Test Scoring.
  2. From the “Test Scoring” tab, click on “Enter Your Answers” next to the appropriate practice test and follow the directions on the scoring templates as a reference if you are unsure.
  3. Once you access the proper test, use the buttons to enter your answer choices. By selecting "Save and Grade My Answers" at the bottom of the page, you'll receive a detailed report of your strengths and weaknesses.

This section contains homework assignments for every lesson. Each PowerScore lesson is accompanied by a two-part homework assignment:

The homework is required for the Score Increase Guarantee, but will not be reviewed by your instructor or PowerScore unless you request a repeat of the course due to the lack of a sufficient score increase. Although this homework is not graded in class, it is imperative that you practice the concepts learned in each session. Our highest score increases occur when a student has attended every class and completed all of the homework. We ask that parents ensure their students complete the homework for each class.

The Online Student Center also includes additional resources, such as ACT Math and English Flash Cards and additional practice questions. These supplements are not required as a part of your homework, but offered for students who are seeking maximum score increases and those who are willing to go above and beyond in their test preparation.
